Commission a Scale Model
Have something specific in mind? Welsh Scale Models builds aircraft, warships, military subjects and sci-fi models to commission.
UK & Northern Ireland only — I currently don't ship commissions overseas.
Commissions
Never done this before? Here's exactly how it works.
You don't need to know any of the technical stuff, or what to do. I'm here to help, advise and build exactly what you want.
Whether it's an indulgence for the man cave, a birthday, Christmas or retirement gift, a present for a partner, or a tribute to service in the armed forces, I can help.
It could be a particular aircraft, warship, submarine, vehicle or film subject.
It could be something you flew, worked on or served on. It might be a favourite aircraft, something from your childhood, or simply something you've always wanted.
There are two easy ways to get in touch:
Got a photo? Send your whole enquiry using the WhatsApp button at the bottom of this page. Just the photo, what it is and roughly what size you're after.
No photo, or a web link instead? Use the enquiry form. Tell me what it is and roughly what size, and paste in the link if you have one.
Either way, let me know if you need it by a particular date.
You don't need to know the correct scale, kit manufacturer or modelling terminology. If you're not sure, I'll ask the questions and guide you through it.
A WhatsApp message or the enquiry form. Ten minutes of your time. No commitment and no charge to ask.
I'll find out what's available and work out the best way to build your model.
That might mean choosing the right kit, scale, markings, display base or other details.
I'll explain the options in plain English and give you my honest recommendation.
If something isn't practical or I don't think the result will be good enough, I'll tell you. If there's no suitable kit or 3D print for your subject, I'll tell you that straight away too.
Every commission is different, so there isn't a standard price list. Every model is individually quoted, all-in.
Once I know what you'd like, I'll give you a ballpark figure in my first reply, so you know where you stand before either of us spends more time on it.
Your quote covers the model, the complete build and finishing, plus tracked delivery.
There is no charge for asking and no obligation to go ahead.
Once you're happy with the quote, a deposit covers the kit and materials and secures your place in the build queue.
Then I get on with building it.
You'll receive photographs as your model takes shape, so you can see the progress along the way.
You don't build anything. That's my job.
Most commissions take 6–12 weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the model. Large, lit or bespoke display pieces can take considerably longer.
I'm a one-man workshop, so each commission is booked into a build slot in advance.
I work on a build rota. Every commission on the bench gets a set amount of work in turn, so they all keep moving forward. When a slot opens up, your commission joins the rota and gets priority to get it properly under way. The 6–12 weeks starts from there.
Nothing gets left sitting on a shelf, and you'll get progress photos as it comes together.
I don't take rush jobs or work to short deadlines. If you need a model for a particular date, tell me when you first get in touch and I'll be honest about whether it's possible.
Every model I build starts as a kit or a 3D-printed model, like the Nostromo and Klingon Bird of Prey on the Sci-Fi page. I build, paint, light and finish them.
I don't build from scratch. If there's no kit or 3D print available for a subject, I can't build it.
The main areas I work in are:
Aircraft
Military and civilian aircraft, from historic aircraft to modern jets.
Warships & naval subjects
Modern and post-war warships, submarines and aircraft carriers, with selected WWII subjects also considered.
I don't undertake sailing ships, sailing warships, tall ships, merchant ships, liners or civilian vessels.
Military & vehicles
Armoured vehicles, military subjects and selected civilian vehicles.
Sci-fi & film/TV
Science-fiction, film and television subjects, including larger display pieces and fully lit models.
I don't build models for outdoor or public display. Everything I make is a display model for indoors.
A finished model, ready to display.
The construction, painting, markings, weathering and finishing are all taken care of as part of the commission.
It's not a kit for you to build. It's not a project for you to finish.
It's a completed display piece, built specifically for you.
I'll send you photographs of the completed model before it leaves the workshop.
Once you're happy, the balance is paid and I carefully prepare it for delivery.
Models are securely packed and sent by tracked, insured 24-hour courier.
Delivery is available throughout the UK and Northern Ireland only.
For particularly large or delicate models, collection may sometimes be necessary. I'll let you know before you commit to the commission.
Instalment arrangements can also be discussed for larger commissions.
Why do people commission models?
There are all sorts of reasons.
A favourite aircraft. A warship or submarine they served on. A career they were proud of. A childhood memory. A retirement gift. A birthday or anniversary. A tribute to someone important to them.
Or sometimes because they've simply always wanted one.
Whatever the reason, the model should mean something to you.
Ready to talk about yours? Got a photo? WhatsApp me. No photo, or a web link? Use the enquiry form. I'll take it from there.
There's no charge to ask and no obligation to commission.
